Water parade headlines fourth annual Newell Fun Day

NEWELL -- Things are set to get wet and wild in Newell on Aug. 1 as the community prepares for its fourth annual Newell Fun Day.
Organized by the Newell Community Coalition, activities will begin at 11 a.m. in and around the Newell Community Center and include a dunk tank, foam pit, bounce house, food trucks and more.
A cornhole tournament also is planned, with an entry fee of $20 per team.
The Mad River Men will perform at 3 p.m.
This year’s event also will feature the inaugural Stop, Drop and Run 5K and Walk, hosted by the Newell Volunteer Fire Department.
Day-of registration begins at 8 a.m., with the race starting at 9 a.m. at Clarke Athletic Field.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the fire department’s equipment fund, supporting the purchase of protective gear, rescue tools, training and other resources for the department’s firefighters.
The day’s signature event is the Water Parade, which begins at 4 p.m.
Registered participants will travel along a parade route through Newell armed with squirt guns to spray spectators, while water barrels positioned along Washington Street will give onlookers a chance to soak the passing floats.
The parade is limited to 50 floats, which will be judged. The winning entry will receive up to 10 annual passes to the Wayne Six Toll Bridge.
