WEIRTON -- The Weirton Traffic Commission has recommended creating a dedicated accessible parking space for a resident on Greenbrier Road, although unrelated concerns about the street also were raised during last week’s meeting.
The commission considered a request for the designated space at 301 Greenbrier Road.
“They’re for my father,” Stephanie Kyle said, explaining her father has difficulty walking and the driveway to his home has a steep grade.
Parking and speeding concerns on Greenbrier Road have come before the Traffic Commission several times in recent years, prompting commissioners to express caution before making a decision.
“Are we opening a can of worms?” Commission Chair Romie Castelli asked.
Commissioner Fred Marsh said the resident has a disability placard and, under the law, is entitled to request a dedicated accessible parking space.
He added there should not be any issues with visibility for motorists traveling the street.
“This section of Greenbrier has the clearest line of sight. I don’t know what the issue is,” Marsh said.
Commissioner Bill Visnic and Public Works Director Allen Hess also said there are no parking restrictions that would prevent a vehicle from parking on the street.
Kyle said residents continue to have concerns about speeding traffic in the neighborhood despite the commission previously recommending new stop signs at several intersections. She also noted vehicles parked along the street have been struck on multiple occasions.
Police Chief Charlie Kush said the situation is similar to Brightway, where motorists must navigate around vehicles parked on the street while extending courtesy to oncoming traffic.
A second request on the agenda -- to install another traffic mirror on the pole across from 125 Kusic St. -- was not recommended.
“I don’t think it’s the City of Weirton’s responsibility to get people out of their driveways,” Hess said.
Visnic noted the commission previously approved the installation of one traffic mirror across from the property and recommended lowering the speed limit on Kusic Street.
