WEIRTON -- Blood donors are needed every day to support patients undergoing medical treatments, including those living with sickle cell disease.
During Sickle Cell Awareness Month in September, Vitalant is highlighting the need for donors. Patients with sickle cell disease often require regular blood transfusions and may need closely matched blood because frequent transfusions can cause antibodies to develop.
Only about 3% of eligible people donate blood, making a broad donor base important for providing specialized matches.
Donors who give Sept. 1-10 using promo code LABORDAY-2026-V can receive a $20 gift card. Those who donate throughout September can receive a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt, while supplies last and terms and conditions apply.
