The City of Weirton was recognized during the West Virginia Municipal League’s annual conference, held last week in Charleston, with the All-Star Community Award for Enrichment. The award was presented in recognition of the city’s efforts to pave and improve the Panhandle Rail Trail over the last seven years, which included the installation of new directional signs. Pictured, Monday, during the Weirton Council meeting were, from left, Public Works Director Allen Hess, whose staff performed much of the paving, Parks Executive Director Coty Shingle, Mayor Dean Harris, Assistant City Manager DeeAnn Pulliam, and City Clerk Kim Long. The initial stages of the paving was kicked off with the receipt of a West Virginia Transportation Alternatives Program grant, with additional funding through Weirton Council, the county commissioners in Hancock and Brooke counties, the Park Board, the J.C. Williams Foundation, and the Mary Jane Brooks Foundation.
