Washington Street between the Market Street ramp and N. 7th closing for at least a week

STEUBENVILLE -- Washington Street (Ohio 43) between the Market Street ramp and N. 7th Street will close today so crews can repair a joint failure affecting all four lanes of traffic, a process expected to take "at least" seven- to 10 days to complete.

City Engineer Mike Dolak said the road is a major transportation route, used by about 9,000 vehicles a day.

"A concrete failure has occurred creating a hazardous condition," he said. "It is imperative that the roadway be closed and the damaged section of the pavement repaired as soon as possible to ensure the safety of the traveling public and to minimize further deterioration of the roadway."

It's the second time in 13 months that the emergency repairs have been ordered on Washington Street: In June 2025 there was a “concrete pavement failure” at the road joint in a different area stretching across three lanes of traffic, impacting northbound traffic between N. 7th and Belleview Boulevard.

This time, Dolak said motorists headed westbound on Washington Street (SR43 North) will use the Adams Street ramp to get to the west end. Drivers eastbound on Washington Street (SR 43 South) will have to use the Market Street Ramp to get downtown.

"We understand the significance of this roadway and the impact its closure has on the traveling public," Dolak said. "The contractor will be working diligently to complete the repairs and reopen the roadway as quickly as possible, while ensuring the work is completed safely and adheres to the highest standards."

Dolak said the concrete is about 16 years old. "I think the rest of the roadway is in pretty good shape," he said.

Motorists are advised to slow down, exercise caution, and be alert for traffic pattern changes through the construction area, he said. Those with questions should contact Dolak at (740) 283-6000, ext. 3303.

He said repairing the concrete pavement joint failure will cost about $24,000. Ft. Steuben Maintenance will do the work.
