Weir Memorial Park flexes new addition

WEIRTON - A new amenity will soon be ready for use at one of Weirton’s major parks.
After close to a year of planning, an outdoor fitness court, developed in partnership with the National Fitness Campaign, has been installed at the Margaret Manson Weir Memorial Park in the city’s Marland Heights area.
"It’s ready to roll," Weirton Parks Executive Director Coty Shingle said, noting there are still some components from the installation in need of removal before the court can officially be opened to the public.
Thursday morning, caution tape surrounded the facility in an effort to keep people from using the equipment just yet.
Equipment arrived at the park in June, with a concrete base poured in July.
The courts offer up to seven zones of exercise activities, focusing on squats, core workouts, push and pull activities, lunges and agility and bending, establishing opportunities for a circuit workout through designated stations.
The National Fitness Campaign Fitness Court also utilizes a smartphone application to connect users with a network of other fitness courts and training programs made available through the campaign.
The National Fitness Campaign describes its Fitness Court sites as being “designed to provide a full-body workout in only seven minutes, all for free in the great outdoors.”
The project was funded through a $30,000 grant from the National Fitness Campaign, along with a $145,000 local match provided by the City of Weirton and the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation.
The court is part of a series of improvements performed at the park in recent years, including the recent unveiling of a renovated tennis and pickleball court. Other work has included the construction of a new restroom facility, the installation of new roofing on the park’s three shelters, new lighting, and the paving of the governor’s drive. In-house crews are expected to surface, line and seal the park’s basketball court in the coming weeks.
"That will pretty much close Phase 1," Shingle said.
