Trey Zambito named Brooke High School principal

WELLSBURG -- Earlier this month, Trey Zambito was named interim head principal at Brooke High School.
On Monday night, members of the Brooke County Board of Education voted to remove the interim from his title.
In a 4-0 vote, board members approved Superintendent Jeffrey Crook’s recommendation that Zambito be named the school’s new principal.
“We had a process, and of all of the qualified applicants, he was the successful person,” Crook said after the meeting.
The vote came after an executive session that lasted one hour and 16 minutes.
Zambito is no stranger to the high school, having served as assistant principal for the last four years.
He was elevated to interim principal after the school’s former principal, Eric James, was arrested and accused of placing recording devices in locker rooms at the school that were used by females. James was originally placed on unpaid suspension and was officially terminated during the Sept. 14 board meeting.
Deputy Superintendent Corey Murphy outlined the process used to select Zambito, who was one of several applicants. Murphy said the selection committee considered the views and thoughts of a large cross section of community members, school personnel and parents before making its decision.
Board member Stacy Paris said during the meeting that including the views of the community was a critical part of the process. She said it also was important to note that while Crook and Murphy advised, neither was involved with the committee.
“I think that we have just come through a very rough spot, and this helps as we move forward,” she added.
Also during the meeting, board President Dr. Robert Marks said the board will meet in a special session at 6 p.m. Oct. 6 to select a member to replace Antoinette Perkins. The longtime Brooke County educator and board member died Sept. 14 at the age of 75. In July, she began her 10th year as a board member.
A moment of silence was held in her memory before the start of the meeting.
The deadline to apply for the open seat is 4 p.m. Wednesday. To be eligible, a person must be a resident of the Follansbee or Weirton district in Brooke County, be a citizen of the United States and a resident of Brooke County, hold a high school diploma or GED, not be employed by the Brooke County Board of Education and not have been convicted of abuse, neglect or sexual abuse of a minor child.
In other matters, the board:
• Approved several overnight or day trips for student activities or employee training;
• Approved numerous personnel items;
• Approved a request to enter into an agreement for clinical experiences between the Franciscan University of Steubenville and Brooke County Schools;
• Approved a memorandum of understanding between Salem University and the Brooke County School District;
• Approved the purchase of additional Heggert Phonological Awareness first-and second-grade subscriptions and kids for classroom instruction in the amount of $6,340, to be paid from Step 7 funds;
• Approved a request by Jason Williamson to purchase pool steps from Recreonics in the amount of $7,346.81, plus freight charges; and
• Heard the reading of a proclamation from Gov. Patrick Morrisey declaring Monday as West Virginia School Service Personnel Day.
The board’s next regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 12, at the board offices, 1201 Pleasant Ave.
