Del. Shawn Fluharty has received an endorsement in the race for West Virginia Senate District 1 that Democrats don’t often earn.

Fluharty has received an endorsement from the West Virginia Chamber PAC, the political action committee for the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, confirmed by a letter Fluharty received from the state Chamber at the end of September.

“The Chamber PAC supports candidates who will work to improve education outcomes and foster an environment where businesses can grow and create jobs,” wrote West Virginia Chamber of Commerce President Stephen Roberts in the letter.

Fluharty, who is taking on incumbent Sen. Laura Wakim Chapman, R-Ohio, in the race, said he was honored to receive the Chamber PAC’s endorsement, especially when the PAC had eschewed partisan politics in doing so.

A Chamber PAC endorsement doesn’t come often for Democrats, at least in the 2024 general election. That year, the Chamber endorsed just two Democrats in the state Senate races and none in the races for House of Delegates.

“It means we’re both committed to seeing West Virginia grow,” Fluharty said. “We are committed to governing in a way that brings opportunities to the state of West Virginia for businesses and families and dedicated to keeping our young people here.”

Fluharty said he hopes to continue that work in growing jobs and bringing opportunities to the state.

“I feel, and I think that many agree with me, that we have been governing from the fringe in the state of West Virginia, and governing from the fringe does not create growth, and the data supports that. We have people in power right now, including our governor, who have taken up more social issues than real issues that impact West Virginians, and the results are we are not growing.”

Chapman has also secured endorsements in this campaign season. The West Virginia Coal Association and West Virginia Association of Realtors endorsed her in the primary election, and the Brooke County Republican Executive Committee endorsed her in September. She also has received the endorsement of Gov. Patrick Morrisey.
