JVS Planning Veterans Day Breakfast for Nov. 10

BLOOMINGDALE -- Jefferson County Joint Vocational School is heralding those who have served our country by planning its second annual Veterans Day Breakfast on Nov. 10.

Events will get underway with the breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and local military heroes are invited to break bread and view a program in the cafeteria of the school, located at 1509 County Highway 22A in Bloomingdale. Superintendent Ted Gorman said the day was chosen to not conflict with other schools' celebrations. More than 70 people attended the inaugural event last year and hopes are to have a similarly successful turnout this time.

"We will welcome veterans and community members for a free breakfast, time with our students and a program honoring those who have served our country. Our guest speaker will be JVS graduate Terry Dear, Sr.," Gorman said. "We want our veterans to feel welcome and know how much we appreciate their service."

Dear served in the U.S. Army from 2007 to 2014 and Gorman said officials were proud to welcome him back to JVS to share his experiences and help honor the veterans. School students and staff will also play an integral role, from preparing the meal to taking part in the program.

"Our students and staff make this event possible. Last year, culinary arts students prepared and served the breakfast, Transition to Work students helped with programs and ushering and students from several programs led the ceremony. Their involvement made it especially meaningful and we look forward to having our school community come together again this year."

Gorman added the breakfast was open to the public and anyone who wished to join was welcome, while each JVS student may also invite a veteran as a guest.

"You do not need to have a connection to a JVS student to attend," he noted, saying the breakfast was a way to recognize and thank those who put their lives on the line for our nation. "We started this breakfast to honor those who have served our country and help our students understand the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy. We want students to have the opportunity to sit with veterans, hear their stories, and thank them personally.

"We want our veterans to know they are valued and always welcome at JVS. This breakfast is a small way to show our gratitude while teaching our students the importance of service, respect, and giving back to their community. We invite the community to join us in thanking those who have served."

The RSVP deadline has been set for Nov. 1 but walk-ins are welcome. Students can register their veteran guest via the Google Form sent to their JVS email and residents may contact the JVS at (740) 264-5545 or email robin.mcglone@jeffjvs.org to RSVP or for more information.
