WELLSBURG -- Members of the Brooke County Board of Education moved a step closer to filling a vacancy Tuesday night.

The board chose to interview the top five candidates for the open spot during a special session set for 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at the board of education office complex.

That decision came on a 4-0 vote after an executive session that lasted one hour and 49 minutes while board members considered the 18 applicants for the post.

“They had the letters of intent, and they had the resumes they went through,” Superintendent Jeffrey Crook explained after the meeting. “They knew some of the people -- some board members knew everyone, and some didn’t.”

The vacancy on the board was created by the Sept. 14 death of Antoinette Perkins. A longtime educator and board member, Perkins, who was 75, had started her 10th year on the board in July, and had been selected as its president. Dr. Richard Marks was chosen as the new board president during a special meeting on Sept. 24.

Also at that meeting, the board began the application process. Applicants were required to reside in either the Weirton or Follansbee district of Brooke County. The deadline to submit letters of interest and resumes was Sept. 30.

“Just to be thorough in the process, they decided to do interviews,” Crook explained. “A lot of times when you have an important position, you want to make sure you follow the proper steps in order to make sure you have the right fit.”

Crook said it is possible they will make a decision that night, but added there would be no guarantee.

“I’m guessing yes, but that’s up to the board. They might be ready, or they might want to sleep on it,” he said.

Next week will be busy for board members -- the next regularly scheduled meeting has been set for 6 p.m. Monday.
