STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County is launching a new service that will strengthen the community by helping those in need connect to local resources.

Community Navigator is a social service program that starts at the Main Library on Tuesday. Sarita Asawa, the library’s community outreach coordinator who created the program, says that Community Navigator is in collaboration with Franciscan University of Steubenville and Jefferson County Resource Network. This service puts a face behind the desk to help visitors identify their needs and ensure pathways to support.

“Jefferson County Resource Network is an important countywide resource. The Community Navigator adds personal assistance to that directory, helping patrons identify services, confirm what they need to apply, and connect with the right organization,” said Asawa.

The program will be staffed by a Franciscan University social work intern each semester, who will help patrons use the Jefferson County Resource Network to find local services and understand next steps.

Gretta Engel is a senior at Franciscan University studying Social Work. She is currently interning at the library and assisted Asawa in developing the program.

“My experience building this program has been one of collaboration. It has been a shared effort with PLSJ and the Jefferson County Resource Network. I believe this program will connect local agencies and provide an awareness to the many resources available in Jefferson County,” said Engel.

She explained that the intern will help patrons verify program requirements, gather or print documents, complete applications and make appointments. Initial focus areas include food, utility assistance, housing, health and family services and disability services. Printing and faxing needs associated with this service will be free at the library.

“The program focuses special attention on providing assistance with food insecurity, housing insecurity, childcare, transportation and health care. The role of the Community Navigator is to connect residents of Jefferson County to the resources they need,” said Engel.

The library is a trusted resource that provides reliable information, programs, and services to the public. But unlike most services or items that require a library card for access, Community Navigator does not. Asawa adds that this new service will begin at the Main Library and eventually expand to additional library branches.

Walk-in hours at the Main Library are on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and appointments can be scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For information or to schedule an appointment, email socialworkerintern@seolibraries.org or call the Main Library at (740) 282-9782.
