GARY NARDO

NARDO, Gary Lee, 79, died peacefully in his sleep on July 10, 2023 after a day with his sons at his bedside in Richmond, Virginia following a difficult battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nettie Gail (Reed) Nardo; parents Nicholas and Catherine Zielinski Nardo of New Cumberland, WV; and two brothers, Nicholas Nardo of Weirton, WV and William Nardo of Ashland, OH. Mr. Nardo is survived by his sons, G. Paul Nardo and wife, Mary Augusta Barham of Richmond, VA, and Thomas Henry Nardo and wife, Lee, of Laytonsville, MD; three grandchildren, Barham Reed Tyler Nardo of Madrid, Spain, Ian Alexander Nardo and Kaitlyn Isabella Nardo of Laytonsville, MD; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, including Laurie, Bob and Todd Mehaffey of New Cumberland, WV.

Mr. Nardo was born on January 22, 1944 in New Cumberland, WV. After graduating from New Cumberland High School in 1963, he attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1965, he married his high school sweetheart, Gail, and they enjoyed over 52 years of marriage, until Gail’s passing in 2018.

Gary moved to Richmond, VA in 2021 to be closer to his sons.

Gary worked at Weirton Steel Corp. in the blast furnace for 40 years, ably provided for his family, and retired in 2005. In his hometown community of New Cumberland, he was an active volunteer fireman for many years, served several terms on City Council, and always went out of his way to help his friends and neighbors and serve those in need.

He was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in New Cumberland, WV.

A devoted family man, Gary coached Little League baseball, cheered on his boys at countless sports events, and participated in activities sponsored by the Oak Glen High School Boosters. Above all, he cherished spending time with his wife, and they relished their “trip of a lifetime” to Rome and The Holy Land in 1997. He also was an avid woodworker who hand-crafted guitars, furniture, models and other memorabilia. While not a huge talker but certainly a doer, Gary’s big smile, good-spirited sense of caring and service was admired by all. He will be sadly missed but certainly not forgotten.
