GEORGE ANETAKIS
George J. Anetakis, 89, of Weirton, WV, a distinguished attorney, and co-founder of the Frankovitch and Anetakis Law Firm, died peacefully on October 16, 2023.
George was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1934 to James G. and Georgia Pehenakis Anetakis, who immigrated from Crete, Greece. One of three sons, he spent his formative years in Greensburg, PA.
George was a proud alumnus of Waynesburg College and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1961, where he laid the foundation for his remarkable legal career. He was a member of the West Virginia State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia, and the Hancock County Bar Association.
As an industrious young lawyer, George, alongside Carl Frankovitch, founded the Frankovitch and Anetakis Law Firm in 1967, which, over the years, built a well- earned reputation for legal expertise in various areas of law across West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The firm’s success was a testament to George’s fastidious work ethic and commitment and his stewardship as Partner for over fifty years.
George served in the United States Army Reserves and was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton, WV. He also served on the board of AAA West Penn/West Virginia.
He found camaraderie as a member of the former Elks Lodge 1801, Williams Golf and Country Club, and served as the past president of the Williams Country Club Board of Directors. He was an avid golfer and cherished the time he spent with his friends, known as” The Gang” at Williams Country Club, including Art Sosenko, Manny Alatis, Zip Suray, and Mike Rumora.
George had a deep love for sports and was a dedicated fan of West Virginia University and Waynesburg College sports. Proud also of his Greek heritage, he took his children on trips to Greece to visit extended family and instilled in them a love of adventure, family, and culture. In his family, and to all who knew him, he modeled a thoughtful and wise presence.
He was predeceased by his parents and his twin brother, John Anetakis.
He will be remembered with love by his devoted wife of 57 years, Jacquelyn Wallace Anetakis, his brother Louis Anetakis (Irene), his sons, James George “Jimmy” Anetakis (Gina) and J. George “Jack” Anetakis (Zoe), and his daughter, Margaret Steiner (David).
He was beloved “Papou” to his five grandchildren, Liv and Erik Steiner, Isabella Anetakis, and Theodora and George Anetakis, all of whom were his north star and his true pride and joy in life.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV, on Friday from 4 PM until 7 PM, and additionally on Saturday from 8:30 AM until the time of the Funeral Liturgy at 9:00 AM at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton.
George will be laid to rest at Saint Paul’s Cemetery in Weirton.
