HOWARD IRVIN JR.

Howard Russell “Russ” Irvin Jr. of Wellsburg, WV passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the age of 91.

Russ was a devoted husband and was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Janet (Atwell) Irvin.

Russ was born on September 16, 1932, and raised in Wellsburg, WV, a son of the late Howard “Skeet” Irvin Sr. and Clara (McQuisten) Irvin. In addition to his parents and wife, Janet, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Charles Irvin.

After high school Russ attended Bethany College and graduated in 1954. During his time at Bethany, he was called to serve his country and joined the United States Army and spent two years in Germany. He joined Weirton Steel after graduation from Bethany College. He was a foreman in the Tandem mill later becoming superintendent of the cold mill and retired as manager of the strip steel with over 40 years of service.

Russ volunteered to coach his sons’ little league baseball teams and loved to fish. He was a life -long member of the Wellsburg Christian Church, serving as a Deacon, head of the property committee and chairman of the board. Russ was also a member of the Wellsburg Elks Lodge and a past Exalted Ruler, a member of the Wellsburg Masonic Lodge #2 A.F. & A.M. and served on the Wellsburg Bridge Committee for many years and proudly attended the bridge dedication.

He is survived by four children, Deborah (Kevin) McCarthy, Howard Rusty Irvin, III, Janice (David) Shaffer, Richard (Cecelia) Irvin; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. at the Mullenbach Funeral Home, 669 Main St., Follansbee, WV with Elder Marvin Whiteman officiating.

Interment will follow in Franklin Cemetery in Wellsburg, WV.

The Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad and the Army Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wellsburg Christian Church at 10th and Charles streets, Wellsburg, WV 26070.
