DONALD McABEE
Donald John McAbee, 91 of Follansbee, WV, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at his residence.
Don was born on April 30, 1933 in Hollidays Cove, WV. He was the son of the late John Charles McAbee and Elizabeth Leona (McGough) McAbee.
Don served his country proudly in the United States Navy as a Boiler Tender 1st Class. He was a member of the Colliers United Methodist Church where he sang in the Choir. Don worked at Weirton Steel Corporation for 39 years as a certified welder. Don was also a member of the National Rifle Association, VFW – Weirton, WV and the 25 Year Club. He enjoyed golfing, getting his first Hole-In-One at the age of 82 with his second Hole-In-One later that same year in addition to being an avid bowler. Don loved to hunt and fish with his son, Donald P. enjoying several bear hunts to Canada and a moose hunt to Newfoundland together. He also went bear hunting in Maine accompanied by his wife and daughter. In his younger years, he hunted antelope in Colorado and snagged several trophy deer in Ohio and West Virginia.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his son, Tommy Allen McAbee, a brother, Paul “Budgie” McAbee, and three sisters, Darlynn Ellen Croce, Karen L. Tate and Laurene Ragan.
Donald is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Almyra (Anderson) McAbee, a son, Donald P. McAbee, wife, Dena, a daughter, Darlynn S. Clark, husband, Jim, three grandchildren, Heather Coy, husband, Joe, Amber Dowdle, husband, Dan and Justin McAbee, four great grandchildren, Shane Lucey, William Coy, Hunter McAbee and Hoyt McAbee and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, May 27, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM and again on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 11:00 AM until time of Funeral Service at 12 Noon at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, WV (304)527-1717 with Reverend James Rahr, officiating.
Entombment will follow at Highland Hills Memorial Gardens, Follansbee, WV with Military Honors by the United States Navy and American Legion Post 10 – Weirton.
