LENA DRAKOS
Lena Marie Drakos, of Weirton, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2024, at the Weirton Geriatric Center, with her devoted daughter by her side. She was one hundred years old.
A resident of their Alzheimer’s Unit for the last nine years, Lena was born on August 17, 1923, to Sebastian and Marie DiCamillo Abbonizio/Bonnizzio.
A proud graduate of Weir High School in 1942, Lena contributed to the war effort during WWII by working at Weirton Steel in the Tin Mill, sorting tin plate. She later served the Hancock County Court while expertly managing her roles as a homemaker and mother. Lena was not only an exceptional cook, known for her spaghetti and meatballs that fed the neighborhood but also an artist with her needlework and skills as a seamstress.
A devout member of St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers, Lena also volunteered at Weirton Hospital and with the Literacy Reading Program. Her social life was rich with activities including card games, coffee meet-ups, and birthday clubs. Lena took up golfing at 63 and even achieved a hole-in-one, leading to her love and enjoyment of hosting many golf tournaments.
Lena in her later years was known for her love of Klondike bars. However, many would have known her in her early life enjoying a good cocktail party. In her memory, please raise a glass to Lena and her vibrant life.
Lena’s kindness, creativity, and vivacious spirit touched many throughout her century of life. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
Lena was preceded in death by the love of her life her husband James Drakos, Sr., and sons James N. Drakos, Jr., and recently David Drakos, brothers Antonio P. Abbonizio, and Domenic E and Nick C. Bonnizzio and sister Catherine E. “Katie” Bonnizzio.
