BARBARA CARTER
Barbara A. Carter, 90, of Toronto, OH, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in the Country Club Manor in Steubenville, OH.
Barbara was born March 23, 1934, in Toronto, daughter of the late Konstant and Mary (Malyszko) Harasimik.
Barbara was a 1952 graduate of Toronto High School. She received a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University in 1956 and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
She became an elementary teacher and accepted her first job teaching second grade for Toronto City Schools in 1955. She would continue to teach second grade for 57 years, retiring in 2012.
During her teaching career Barbara was the recipient of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation Award and the Joseph and Anna Marie Karaffa Award.
Her memberships include the St. Francis Catholic Church in Toronto, Toronto Beautification Committee, former Three Arts Club of Toronto, Jefferson Co. Retired Teachers Association, St. Francis Piecemakers Group, Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK) Teacher Sorority where she served as a Past State Treasurer, and the local Beta Alpha Chapter of ADK where she served as President from 1988-1990.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Dick” Carter (2020), sister, Anastasia Tarulli, brothers, John and Martin Harasimik, nieces, Rosemary Rebres and Diane Tarulli, and great nephews, Nate Rock and Michael Sinosky.
Barbara is survived by nieces, Janice McClain and Adriana (Tim) Rock; nephew, John Harasimik; great nieces, Gail (Trevor) Nickerson, Nicole (Troy) Stewart, Tara (Mitch) LeMasters and their families; great nephews, Paul Rebres, and Jared (Deanna) Rock and family; great-great nieces and nephews, Alexandria and Kylie Parker, William Nickerson, Blake Rebres, and Michael Janzen.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 24 from 4 pm to 7 pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto. A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will follow on Tuesday at 11 am at St. Francis Catholic Church. Fr. Thomas Vennitti will celebrate, and burial will follow in the Toronto Union Cemetery.
