DAVID GOSSETT

David Michael Gossett was born in Akron, OH. in 1952 to parents James and Helen Gossett.

He studied journalism at Ohio University where he was largely involved in the reporting of anti-war protests in the early 1970s. He then went on to work for many Ohio Valley news and multimedia agencies such as the Herald Star, WLIT-AM, and Weirton Daily Times. During those early years at the Herald Star, he met his wife of over forty years, Loretta Campbell.

He also worked at Weirton Steel for some years and served time as a union representative and a media liaison during the Stand Up for Steel era. During that time, he spoke to politicians and foreign news agencies about pressing steel industry matters.

A lifelong Cleveland sports fan, he shared his love of baseball and football with his kids by coaching various Steubenville little league teams, as well as the All Saints Flag Football team. In the early 2000s, he also lent his voice to the Steubenville Catholic Central Crusader Marching Band as the announcer for football games and varsity shows while his children played in the band.

After his time at Weirton Steel, he returned to the Herald Star. As a reporter, he was described as an “old-school newsman” for his drive to cover any story, no matter how big or how small. He won multiple awards for his journalism and photography from the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors and the West Virginia Press Association. His time at the paper gave him the opportunity to cover a wide range of topics from local elections and Ohio Valley festivals to visits from national politicians such as John McCain and Joe Biden.

His post-retirement years were spent among family. He was an avid reader and enjoyed babysitting his grandkids.

David was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church where he proudly served as an usher for many years. He is preceded in death by parents Helen and James Gossett.

David leaves behind his beloved wife Loretta (Campbell) Gossett, children Fr. Michael Gossett, Fr. Matthew Gossett, and Amanda (Matthew) Camm, three grandchildren Sophia, Joseph, and Edward, and his brother, Gary (Jan) Gossett.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 18, from 2-5 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be held Monday at 10 am at St. Peter Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
