MARY LYLE
Mary Catherine Lyle, beloved wife, devoted mother, and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 on July 15, 2025, surrounded by love and cherished memories at Valley Hospice, Liza’s Place, Wheeling, WV.
Born on January 15, 1947, Mary Catherine was the daughter of James A. Grotz Sr. and Martha Grotz, both of whom preceded her in death. She grew up with a deep appreciation for family, education, and faith–values that would guide her throughout her life. A proud Episcopalian, she was an active member of her local parish, where she gave generously of her time and talents in worship and fellowship. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she lived it with humility, grace, and quiet strength.
Mary Catherine spent her career as an educator, shaping young minds with patience, passion, and dedication. Her excellence in the classroom earned her the distinction of 1997 Teacher of the Year, but it was her genuine care for her students and her belief in their potential that left a lasting mark on so many lives.
Mary Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John H. Lyle Jr.; her parents; and her dear brother, James A. Grotz Jr. Though her heart carried these losses, it remained open and full, particularly for her son, James Lyle, who survives her. She was endlessly proud of him and his wife, Monica, and the life they built together.
Mary Catherine was also deeply involved in many civic and professional organizations, always seeking to give back to her community. Her leadership, kindness, and sense of duty enriched every group she touched. She will be remembered not only for her professional accomplishments and her community involvement, but for her boundless compassion, strong moral compass, and the quiet joy she brought into the lives of those around her. Her life was a testament to love, learning, and service–and her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Mary Catherine was blessed with a great network of close friends. Special thanks to those who assisted in her care during her battle with cancer: Emilio, Judy, Kathy, Justina and the wonderful people and staff at Valley Hospice and Liza’s Place.
