MICHAEL KOPA

Michael “Mike” Kopa, 71, of Weirton, WV, passed away at his home on Friday July 25, 2025, with his wife by his side, after a courageous seven-month battle with an aggressive pancreatic cancer.

Born on December 29, 1953, in Weirton, Mike was the third of five children born to the late Patrick and Theresa (Rogalski) Kopa. He grew up in Kings Creek, where he developed a deep and lasting love for the outdoors.

A 1971 graduate of Weir High School, Mike followed in the footsteps of many in the community and began his career at Weirton Steel. He worked there with pride and dedication for 33 years, retiring from the Foster-Wheeler Boiler House.

On January 21, 1993, Mike married the love of his life, Michele “Mitch” DeLawder Patrick. Together, they shared a bond that was truly unbreakable. Inseparable in every way, Mike and Mitch found joy in the simple things–taking care of their home, traveling together, and sharing each other’s company.

Following his mother’s funeral in 2008, Mike sought a new purpose and found it at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, where he became a cherished member of the team. His attention to detail and commitment to excellence helped ensure the facilities were always welcoming and immaculate.

After Mitch retired from K-Mart, the couple had even more time to explore the beauty of nature and travel the world together. From peaceful escapes in Canaan Valley, Blackwater Falls, and Spruce Knob to breathtaking journeys across tropical islands and Alaska, Mike cherished every moment with Mitch.

Mike was happiest outdoors, whether wielding a chainsaw or tinkering in his garage. He had a gift for fixing anything and was known for completing a task before you even asked. His energy was boundless, and his generosity unending. Mitch would always say “If you wanted something done, he did it yesterday.” In recent years, he found joy and fulfillment volunteering at Sacred Heart of Mary’s Lenten Fish Dinners, often being the first to arrive and the last to leave.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and David Kopa.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Michele “Mitch” Kopa; his son, Phillip; his stepsons, Ron Patrick (Kelly) and Keith Patrick (Carrie); his brother, William Kopa (Diane); his sister, Susan Rafacz (Paul); and his treasured grandchildren: Skyler, Jimmy, Tyler, Jayna, Blaze, and Symphony.

In accordance with Mike’s wishes, he will be cremated. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, 200 Preston Ave., Weirton, WV 26062.

It is very appropriate to conclude his obituary with the words of his wife “Mike was my light, my guide, the answers to my questions, my joy, my beautiful man.”

Mike’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Denise Moore of Valley Hospice for the exceptional care, compassion, and support she provided during his final months.
