ROBERT SWEENEY SR.

Robert W. Sweeney, Sr. of Powell, Ohio, formerly of Wintersville, Ohio, passed away on July 14, 2025.
Bob was born in Steubenville, Ohio on May 19, 1946, the son of the late Fred C. and Hazel Williams Sweeney. He was a 1964 graduate of Steubenville High School, a 1969 graduate of Ohio State University, and 1975 master’s graduate of Kent State University.
Bob retired in 1999 from Indian Creek Local School District, where he taught mathematics and marketing education, was a coach and athletic director, and served as an advisor to numerous clubs and organizations at Mingo Junior and Senior High Schools. Bob was selected for inclusion in the Cherry Blossom Memorial Park for his faithful service to the students of Mingo Junction. He was a life member of the National and Ohio Education Associations and the Ohio State Alumni Association. He was also a member of Powell United Methodist Church.
Bob is survived by his wife, Barbara Ryan Sweeney, whom he married in 1968, and two sons – Robert, Jr. (Meredith) of Westerville, Ohio and Douglas (Suzanne) of Sunbury, Ohio. He is also survived by four grandchildren – Madison, Olivia, Erin and Justin. Also surviving are a brother, Fred (Carolyn), and brothers- and sisters-in-law David and Diane Ryan and Steven and Judith Thornley. Surviving nieces and nephews are Beth (Russell) Frees, Megan (Eric) Bell, Jeffrey Ryan, Julie Ryan, and Mark (Stephanie) Thornley.
Per Bob’s wishes there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2 at 10:30 am in the Chapel of Light Mausoleum at Kingwood Memorial Park, 8230 Columbus Pike in Lewis Center, Ohio.
