William Thomas "Bill" Black, of Steubenville, Ohio, passed away on October 5, 2025. Born in Steubenville on December 15, 1937, he was the son of the late Frank T. and Faye P. Black.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grand- father whose greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Beverly Ruth; his five children, Kevin (Michelle), Nancy, Carl, Brian and Eric; his seven grandchildren, Kyle (Karly), Connor, Christian, Colin, Elizabeth, Maya and Julian and his great-granddaughter, Layla. He is also survived by his brother Bob (Hope) and sister-in-law, Karen (Pete) as well as seven nieces and nephews.
Bill graduated from Steubenville High School as Valedictorian of his class in 1955. He began his college career at the University of Cincinnati, receiving his BS in Metallurgical Engineering in 1960. He received his MS degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Ohio State University in 1969.
Bill began his engineering career at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio where he remained for fourteen years. In 1974, Bill and his family relocated to White Plains, NY. He worked at the Copper Development Association for thirty-one years. There he worked at developing new uses and defending existing applications for copper. Bill retired as VP of Wire and Cable in 2005, when he and Beverly decided to return to Steubenville for their retirement years.
Bill dedicated his life to social justice and helping those less fortunate. While residing in Columbus, Ohio Bill was active in a church based organization that encouraged integration in previously all white areas. He actively helped people of color explore home ownership in his community. In White Plains, Bill and Beverly were active in developing housing for homeless persons through their work with SHORE (Sheltering The Homeless Is Our Responsibility). They spent many nights volunteering at shelters, even going as far as to often sleep over and bring laundry home to complete. Bill was an active member of the United Memorial Methodist Church in White Plains.
Bill enjoyed his involvement with the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Steubenville where he set up at least thirty educational tours of the area. He also enjoyed woodworking, puzzles, reading and gardening. His favorite boyhood hero was Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bill was undefeated in the boys, juniors and men's divisions of the Steubenville City Tennis
Tournament. He was a lifelong fan of the Steubenville Big Red football team and, of course, The Pittsburgh Steelers!
In keeping with his giving nature, Bill has chosen to donate his body to the medical research department at Ohio State University. He would like to thank and acknowledge the wonderful staff at Allegheny General Hospital.
