CATHERINE OLIVETI

Catherine Rose Oliveti, 93, of Herndon, Virginia, formerly of Steubenville, Ohio, passed away on January 5, 2026 following a brief illness. Cathy, as she was affectionately known, was the middle daughter of the late Bruno and Isabella Vatrella.

Cathy was a graduate of Steubenville High School and later the College (now University) of Steubenville. Following her graduation, she devoted her entire working career to education, serving as an elementary school teacher in the Steubenville Public School System.

She was a longtime member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and later Holy Family Catholic Church.

Cathy was married to her late husband, Peter Oliveti, for 46 years. Together they raised five children: Joseph (Maureen) of Dillon, Colorado; Ralph of Columbus, Ohio; Frank (Christa) of Amherst, New York; John (Sharon) of Akron, Ohio; and Isabel (Allen) Nickle, with whom she resided.

Cathy loved to travel throughout the United States and proudly visited all 50 states at least once. She and Pete began taking their family on summer vacations in a pop-up camper, traveling wherever the road would take them. After retirement, the camper was replaced with a motorhome, and they continued their adventures whenever and wherever they could.

Everyone that loved Cathy knew she was an avid sports fan and loved cheering on her Pittsburgh Penguins and Steelers.

Cathy also enjoyed arts and crafts. Until just two months prior to her passing, she spent three days a week at the local senior center painting and creating crafts with the many friends she had made there.

Cathy’s greatest joy in life was her family. She deeply loved and stayed closely connected to her extended family, including her nieces, nephews, and many cousins. Spending time together always brought a smile to her face, and she made every effort to attend family gatherings and celebrations. Above all, she cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Nothing made her happier than visiting them or having them visit her.

In addition to her husband and parents, Cathy was preceded in death by her older sister, Angeline Oliveti, and her younger sister, Mary Mayeres.

She is survived by her five children; 10 grandchildren, Tara (Justin) Meyer, Dominic (Michelle) Oliveti, Christopher (Kate) Oliveti, Maria (Eric) Butler, Catherine (Joe) Kysela, Angelina Oliveti, Alexander Nickle, Joseph Oliveti, Peter Nickle, and Matthew Nickle; eight great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, Fr. Drake McCalister will preside. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

In memory of Cathy, donations may be made in her name to Steubenville Catholic Central High School, 320 Westview Ave., Steubenville, OH 43952.
