ARTHUR COATES SR.

Mr. Arthur Donwell Coates Sr. of Aberdeen, MD passed away on January 22, 2026, at the age of 97. Born June 14th, 1928, he was the son of the late Arthur Raymond and Margaret June Coates of Colliers, West Virginia. He graduated from Follansbee High School, and then from the College of Steubenville (now the Franciscan University). After college, he was employed briefly at the Wheeling Steel Corporation and then served in the US Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. After his service, he worked as a research chemist at the US Army Ballistic Research Laboratory. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Marie Silver Coates. He is survived by 3 sons, 7 grandchildren, 8 greatgrandchildren, and, as a descendent of the late Hugh and Marjorie Thompson of Colliers, he is also survived by many Thompson family relatives from his original West Virginia home and other States.
