GIANNA CONTROGUERRA

Gianna Controguerra, 88, of Steubenville, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her daughters on April 7, 2026. She was born on December 23, 1937 in Moscufo, Italy, a Provence of Pescara Italy.

She is the daughter of the late Guilio DiClemente and the late Lilla Luciano DiClemente. Gianna is also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Remo Controguerra, her sister Anna DiClemente D’Andrea.

Gianna is survived by her brother, Dr. Dominic DiClemente, of Pittsburgh; daughters, Marianna (Donald) Ogden, Sheila (David) Werkin both of Steubenville and her granddaughters Jenna ( Michael) Radvansky and Monica (Nathan) Paulman, along with two great grandchildren Michael (Mikey) and Myla whom she adored with all her heart.

Gianna was a member of Triumph of the Cross Parrish, and a long time member of the Italian Culture Club. She was also an employee of the former Hub Department Store in Steubenville, where she worked as a seamstress.

Gianna had several passions during life. First and foremost was her family. She loved them and spending time with them made her so happy.

She also loved cooking for her family and hosting many special dinners over the years. She had several signature dishes, including her wedding soup, meatballs, sauce but especially her porkette. Gianna loved being outside during the summer months, meticulously picking out just the perfect flowers and colors, and taking care that they bloomed all summer.

Gianna loved to travel, Italy was her favorite place to visit, but also loved taking her girls on their annual “Spring Breaks” to Cancun, Mexico, and was the first to say ” I’m going to go too” whenever anyone was going somewhere, even down the street. She had a sense of fashion that was her own, always so put together and made it look effortless. She also had a love for fine china and stemware, and took pride in setting a beautiful table.

The family would like to publicly thank her caregivers who were with and made her so happy. Vanessa Dettorre, and Stacey Bowman. Valley Hospice for all of their care and compassion, Dr. Schmulevich and Dr. VanWeelden along with their office staff who were always there for her when needed.

Gianna came from Italy at the age of 18, after marrying her husband and accomplished so much during her lifetime. She truly lived the American Dream.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 3-6 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Fr. Matthew Gossett will celebrate. Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
