LYNN SWAN

There are a lot of words you could use to describe Lynn Swan, but none sum her up better than these: beloved daughter and sister, loving wife, devoted mother, proud Nan and loyal friend.

A lifelong resident of New Cumberland, Lynn passed away unexpectedly on April 24, 2026, at home. To those who knew and loved her, the void created by her passing is profound.

Lynn was born on March 3, 1955, the youngest of two daughters to the late Walter and Estella Sobel. She attended New Cumberland schools and graduated from Oak Glen High School.

A vivacious person, Lynn lived life to the fullest. She loved to shop, hunting bargains high and low. She had an unmatched sense of fashion, always dressed stylishly and classy; she never met a stranger, always willing to strike up a conversation no matter where she was, and you always knew where you stood with Lynn Swan. And if you didn’t, all you had to do was ask. She wasn’t afraid to let you know.

She also had a caring and compassionate side that showed up as she looked after her parents, sister and husband as their health began to fade.

Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Cathy, her sister- in-law Peggy Swan and her husband, Joseph. W. Swan, with whom she celebrated nearly 51 years of marriage until his passing on June 21, 2021.

Those 51 years with Joe produced two sons, Joseph D. Swan and Michael E. Swan, six grandchildren and a lifetime of love and memories. Whether it was school events, ball games or vacations, Lynn was there. Her family was the center of her universe.

Those annual family vacations ranged from Virginia Beach to Daytona Beach to Myrtle Beach and for the last 25 years, North Topsail Beach. What started as immediate family trips expanded to include extended families like the Wrights, Gibsons and Napolitanos and good times were had and great memories were made.

Probably the only thing that could equal Lynn’s love for the beach trips was Christmas. Her preparation was year-round. The piles of gifts she gave were massive and the satisfaction she felt from being with her family for the holidays was immense.

On the professional side, Lynn began work at Hancock Country Savings Bank in the early 1980s, and her personality, coupled with a keen financial sense, made her a perfect fit for the banking world. She eventually retired from her position as manager of the consumer loans department in 2017.

With a name like Lynn Swan, you better believe the Pittsburgh Steelers were her favorite team, but Jack Lambert was her favorite player. The West Virginia Mountaineers were her college team. She rarely missed a game in Morgantown, and when she couldn’t be there, she was following along at home. She loved Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, sleeping out overnight to get tickets for his concerts and dancing and singing along for three hours every time she saw him play. She loved going to Doo-wop shows and plays in Pittsburgh and Wheeling, and she had a great group of friends who kept her busy after Joe’s death. When she wasn’t on the go, she could usually be found working out in her yard or gardening, sometimes long after the sun had gone down.

Lynn is survived by her sons – Joe and wife, Regan, of Morgantown, West Virginia; Michael and his wife, Sara, of Morganton, North Carolina and grandchildren Walt, Wil, Kelan, Alex, Ellison and Hadley.

Those grandchildren held a place in her heart like no other. Nan, as they all called her, was quick with advice and even quicker with a hug. And you didn’t have to share blood with her for her to consider you one of her own. The kids of her sons’ friends and the friends of her grandchildren all called her Nan and were recipients of her love and affection, too.

Other survivors include her Uncle Tom Sobel and his wife, Nancy, of New Cumberland; sister-in- law Nora Anne White, of New Cumberland; brother- in-law Mike Swan and his wife, Teresa, of New Matamoras, Ohio; brother-in-law Bill Swan, and his wife, Phyllis, of New Cumberland; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends at Nixon Funeral Home in Newell, West Virginia, on Thursday, April 30 from 2-8 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, May 1 with Minister Rick Tinsky of the New Cumberland Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the New Cumberland Cemetery.

Rest in peace Lynn, Mom, Nan. What you did for us, what you taught us, how you loved us, we just can’t put into words how much you meant to us. We’re going to miss you.
