Janie McCue Kern 76, of Winter Haven, FL, formerly of Wintersville and Steubenville, OH, passed away August 29, 2026, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Lakeland, FL. Born April 11, 1950, in Bellshill, Scotland, to the late John and Anne McDowell McCue, Janie came to the U.S. on July 20, 1969--famously joking she had a rougher landing at JFK than Apollo 11 did on the moon.
Janie worked for many years at Steubenville's Ohio Valley Hospital in the ER, Infant Nursery, and Skilled Care before retiring to Florida in 1994. She was an active parishioner at St. Matthew Catholic Church, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), an avid Walt Disney World enthusiast, and an organizer of charitable drives for children and families in need.
She is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Donald "Chonk" Kern; sons, James (Melissa) Kosek and Scott A. (LeDawn) Kosek Sr.; stepdaughter, Debra (Roger) Mills; grandsons, Scott Jr. (Samantha), Shane (Hailey), and Joshua Kosek; great-grandsons, Rowan and Rhett Kosek; and sister, Maureen (James) Woods of Tillicoultry, Scotland. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James M. Kosek, and infant sister, Sarah McCue.
Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home in Wintersville, on Sunday from noon until the time of services at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Michael Gossett officiating. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
