A need to cross the political lines

Cracks have appeared in the wall Democrat Party leaders have erected against any compromise that could end the partial shutdown of federal government. It should come as no surprise that U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., is a leader in trying to restore rationality to the process.

During the weekend, President Donald Trump suggested a compromise regarding immigration policy. It is complex, but the essence of it is that Trump would continue allowing “dreamers” — that is, younger people brought to the United States illegally as children, to remain here if Democrats such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., do not object to $5.7 billion to fund new physical barriers on the nation’s southern border.

Pelosi and Schumer rejected Trump’s olive branch even before he articulated it.

A few Democrats, including Manchin, said the proposal could offer a chance at compromise.

Good for Manchin and others willing to abandon partisan politics to get the government back in full operation and address illegal immigration. Let’s hope their attitude spreads.
