Continue to support your United Way

3 min read

Dollars that you give to your local United Way help your friends and neighbors in many different ways.

That's important to remember as the annual fundraising campaigns conducted by the organizations that serve our region begin to wind down and the pressure to reach their goals begins to build.

The Weirton United Way, for instance, said during its final report meeting on Feb. 20 that it has work to do to complete this year's campaign. Officials reported they had received pledges of $201,585 toward this year's goal of $240,000. That leaves campaign Chair Chris Hatala, board President Don Gianni Jr. and Executive Director Linda Stear and their crew of dedicated volunteers with work to do before this year's campaign can be closed.

At the United Way of Jefferson County, meanwhile, Executive Director Kate Sedgmer said earlier this week that this year's campaign has reached 95 percent of its $350,000. That means she, local volunteers, co-chairs Tyra and Tom Timmons and board President Ted Gorman will be working hard during the next few weeks to ensure the organization reaches its goal.

And, volunteers with the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, which serves agencies in Brooke County, continue to work toward their goal. That campaign is being directed by Chair Lori McGlumphy, board President Rod Haley and Executive Director Jessica Rine.

Agencies supported by the local United Ways ensure that the less-fortunate among us have a place to turn in their times of need. They make sure the hungry have a place to go for food, those who suffer from the cold have a place where they can find warmth and those who need shelter can find a place to stay. They offer support and advocacy for those who are abused, and they help those who have no insurance access medical care.

Residents from across the Tri-State Area continue to show their support for the United Way in many ways, whether it's a one-time donation, through payroll deduction or by participating in a special event, such as the Taste of Jefferson County, the Big Game Tailgate Party or the annual golf tournament held the Weirton United War or the annual Night at the Races that benefits the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley. Others, meanwhile, volunteer their time and talents.

No matter how you choose to participate, remember that money raised by your United Way remains in your community.

If you have already made a donation, we say thank you. If you have not yet made your pledge, there's still time, and your donation is crtically needed -- and much appreciated.

Your friends and neighbors are counting on you.
