Support our local farmers markets

Take some of the region’s freshest produce and throw in an opportunity for area residents to enjoy a pleasant day with family and friends, and you have the perfect recipe for local farmers markets.

Held at many locations throughout the Tri-State Area, the markets offer a chance to buy fresh fruits and vegetables and to support the men and women who grow them. You’ll also find a variety of baked goods; jams, jellies and pickles; and crafts from local organizations, vendors and crafters.

They will have a different look than they have in the past, as the organizers and vendors work to ensure social distancing and other protocols that have been put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic are followed. But even with those restrictions in place, the markets offer the chance to enjoy some time outside and make a purchase or two along the way.

Here’s a sampling of markets that are being held across the region:

¯ The Steubenville Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m every Thursday at the former Grant School property at the corner of Fourth and South streets.

¯ The Farmers Gateway Market, coordinated by the Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District, is taking a new approach and is a virtual marketplace. Customers can visit the market’s website and find information about each week’s participating vendors. They can place orders and pick them up during the market’s traditional hours of 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the parking lot of Eastern Gateway Community College.

¯ The Brooke County Farmers Market has a new location — the parking lot of the Dollar General Market at the intersection of state Route 2 and Cross Creek Road. It is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Wednesday.

¯ The Hancock County Farmers Market is scheduled to open for the season Monday and will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Monday in the parking lot of the Goodwill Thrift Store on Penco Road in Weirton.

We hope everyone will take some time out of their hectic schedules to visit a farmers’ market, enjoy the nutritional benefits that come from eating fresh fruits and vegetables, relax a little with your friends and neighbors and show your support for local farmers.
