Congratulations to our young leaders

A group of 30 area high school sophomores has officially completed a journey which is aimed at better preparing them for the future. The Youth Leadership Weirton program is organized each year through the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce and is open to students in Hancock and Brooke counties.

Following a three-month delay as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the class celebrated its graduation Sunday.

The program, which is supported by a grant from ArcelorMittal USA, provides opportunities to have a taste of the business world, while learning skills which will help the youth later in their lives.

They begin with a teamwork session on the ropes course at Elkhorn Valley. From there, they take part in programs aimed at instilling the ideas of ethics and goal setting, as well as a “True Colors” exercise where they can learn more about their own personality and how it influences their interactions with others.

The final session is known as SIMSOC, where all the lessons have a chance to be brought together to reach a common goal. These graduates are the future of our communities, our state and our nation. Any opportunity to better prepare them for the road ahead is appreciated, and we thank the Weirton Chamber and all involved in organizing the Youth Leadership program for their work.

We also offer our congratulations to these young leaders and wish them well as they use their new skills for the betterment of themselves, and others, in the remainder of their high school years and as they venture out into the world.
