High school football is making its return

The days have been getting noticeably shorter and area children are returning to school. Those indicators remind us that the start of the high school football season is just around the corner.

Whether you are a die-hard fan or just a casual observer, you’ll want to make sure you are prepared for this week’s opening games, and, once again, the best way to do that is to reach for a copy of our annual high school football edition.

Included inside Wednesday’s newspapers, this year’s publication — Prep Football 2020: Mask Up — will offer an in-depth look at each of our region’s teams, and will include schedules and rosters. That’s information you will want to refer to again and again as the season progresses.

This year’s season truly will be unlike any other we have ever seen, as players and coaches have been forced to react to constantly changing guidelines and restrictions. The stories in this year’s edition reflect that.

Indian Creek’s Andrew Connor, for instance, describes how he and his assistants used Zoom meetings to help keep the players in his program on track. Brooke’s Mac McLean, meanwhile, talks about how preparing a team in the middle of a pandemic can lead to anxious moments — “Every time your phone beeps, you think, ‘Is this when I’m going to get the text?'” — he explained.

All of the work, all of the changes and accommodations that have had to be made and all of the anxious waiting is over, though, and it’s time for the season to begin.

Football returns this week — and we hope all area readers will make Prep Football 2020: Mask Up a part of their preparation for the coming season.
