Honoring our Community Stars

The common thread that connects each of this year’s Community Stars is easy to spot — they all do the right thing for their friends, their neighbors and their communities not because they seek the spotlight, but simply because it is the right thing to do.

Those unselfish efforts again are being recognized this year.

Their work makes our area a better place to live and makes them worthy additions to the list of honorees that has been growing each year since the program was started in 1998 by the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times.

Included in this year’s list are Susan Adams of Cadiz, James Bonecutter of Steubenville, Sheena Sellitti Dunham of Weirton, Sandy Grimm of Wintersville, George B. Hines of New Cumberland, Donald Jochims of Hopedale, Nathan Jones of Toronto, Rick and Florence Mader of Amsterdam, Tom “Teek” Mort of Steubenville and Paul Toth of Wintersville.

Dozens of nominations were received for our annual recognition of unsung heroes from across the Tri-State Area.

Their names might not be familiar, but they belong to those who have proven they are willing to offer their time and talents to local organizations and make a real difference.

They always are willing to say “yes” when asked to lend a hand, and are willing to go the extra mile to help those in need.

This year’s recognition will look a little different from what stars have received in the past — another longtime tradition that has fallen victim to precautions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. But while there won’t be a community dinner, each honoree will receive a commemorative star, a gift card from M&M Hardware and a framed certificate they will be able to display. They also will receive a $25 gift card from Froehlich’s Classic Corner that can be used for a celebratory dinner of their own.

In addition, M&M Hardware, a longtime supporting sponsor of the program, will make a $50 donation in the name of each star to a charity of his or her choice.

You’ll find profiles of each of this year’s stars in a special section that is included inside today’s edition. Read their stories and remember that there are many good things happening in our region.

Congratulations, then, are due to each of this year’s stars, and thanks are extended to Weirton Medical Center, which again has stepped forward as the presenting sponsor. Their continued efforts and support ensures we will be able to continue to honor the true stars of our region.
