McKinley a wise choice on Nov. 3

At a time when West Virginians need the very best people fighting for us in Washington, it just makes sense to re-elect U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va.

Since 2011 he has combined a dedication to representing our best interests with the political skill to get things done.

A measure of the trust voters in our state’s First Congressional District have in McKinley can be seen in the last four elections.

In not one did fewer than 62% of voters cast their ballots for him.

McKinley is a staunch conservative who in some ways has compiled an unparalleled record of success in standing up for our state’s energy industry. But he refuses to focus solely on the headline-making issues, preferring instead to champion unglamorous bills that help West Virginians.

Look at the bills he has introduced just this year. They include measures to protect veterans seeking care at VA facilities, to require more federal purchasing of U.S.-made goods, to increase access to telehealth services, get more COVID-19 relief aid for small businesses, provide incentives for physicians to serve rural communities, and help small public water systems.

He also has sponsored bills to fight drug abuse, reduce prescription drug prices and, importantly for our city, to authorize federal funding for the Wheeling National Heritage Area through 2026.

His ability to cut through the bureaucratese and offer common-sense bills has enabled him to get things done by enlisting Democrats to support his proposals. A respected analysis of bipartisanship in the House of Representatives ranks him 10th best among the 435 voting lawmakers.

For nearly a decade, voters in our area have been given many reasons to be delighted that we sent McKinley to Congress.

We endorse him for re-election to the House of Representatives from our state’s First Congressional District.
