For the 18th year, the Millsop Community Center is holding its Christmas Bulletin Board Auction.
Area residents have until Wednesday to visit the community center and place a bid on their choice of several dozen possible prizes up for grabs.
Officials note this is one of the top fundraisers for Weirton's park system, which includes oversight and management of two large, community parks, several neighborhood playgrounds, a local baseball field used by two area high schools and several other teams and the Panhandle Recreation Trail.
COVID has hit the Weirton Parks Department hard, resulting in a loss of around $100,000 in revenue, which means changes to hours, staffing and activities organized for the benefit of the community.
While the auction probably won't fully make up the lost revenue, it will at least make thing a little more tolerable and, hopefully, help the parks department recover a little sooner.
More than that, it also provides residents with an opportunity to support many of our local businesses.
It's a great thing to have as the Christmas holidays get closer and we may be looking for a few last-minute gift opportunities.
The auction includes around 125 gift certificates, all of which come from locally owned businesses. Whether you are looking for a meal at a restaurant, the services of an area mechanic, an overnight stay at one of our hotels, or a specialized gift basket, there is certain to be something of interest.
You never know, maybe when you make use of your prize, you might find something else and become a regular customer.
