Celebrating history and investment

Many of the area’s eyes have been on the ongoing construction of a new bridge which will span the Ohio River between Wellsburg and Brilliant.

The Wellsburg Kiwanis has found a way to not only celebrate this local infrastructural investment but also preserve this time in our area’s history for a future generation, and we hope residents will find a way to contribute to the effort.

The club is accepting items from individuals and groups to be included in a time capsule, which will be buried in a spot along the Brooke County Pioneer Trail, not far from where crews from the Flatiron Corp. have been constructing the 830-foot main span for the bridge.

Those interested in contributing are asked to bring their items to the Brooke County Public Library, the library’s Follansbee branch or either the Chambers or James funeral homes by Thursday. The time capsule, made from a 20-gallon container provided by Eagle Manufacturing, will be sealed and buried around the time the bridge span is being floated down the Ohio River to be installed in its planned position.

The time capsule is planned for opening in 50 years, giving future generations a glimpse back to our lives today.

We thank the Wellsburg Kiwanis for their efforts to commemorate a significant development for our region, as well as our history, and encourage those interested in contributing to do so.
