Hissam’s service appreciated

The Hissam family has been involved with the Chester Volunteer Fire Department since its founding.

That includes the department’s current chief, John Hissam, who recently celebrated 50 years of service with the Hancock County community’s fire service. This makes him the longest serving member in the department’s history.

It truly has been a family tradition, with Hissam’s father and grandfather each serving for 30 years.

John Hissam has been chief of the department since 1990, leading the department in fire service and service to the community. The department’s Fall Bash is an annual fundraiser which began as a way to help improve the department’s facilities, purchase equipment and provide training for its members.

The event has become such a success, that it now also allows the department to support others in the community, with contributions to local youth organizations, education programs and various festivities including Chester’s Independence Day celebration.

Fire service is a calling, with individuals stepping up to risk their lives in an effort to save others. Most of our local firefighters are volunteers, dedicating themselves to these risks away from their regular jobs.

We applaud them all, and we thank John Hissam for everything he has done over the last 50 years in serving the people of Chester and Hancock County.
