Enjoy all things apple this weekend

2 min read

For more than 40 years, the celebration of the Grimes Golden variety of apple has brought people from near and far to Wellsburg the first weekend of October.

The Wellsburg Applefest makes its return this weekend, promising a variety of activities for all ages, along with food and craft vendors, entertainment and more.

The festival takes its inspiration from the Grimes Golden apple, a relative of the Golden Delicious which was discovered on the farm of Thomas Grimes near Route 27 just outside of Wellsburg. The seeds for the apple were, according to local legend, supplied by Johnny "Appleseed" Chapman himself, who traveled parts of the United States and Canada planting apple trees and sharing the Christian gospel.

Throughout its history, residents, churches, community organizations and school groups have come together, selling everything from apple pies and tarts to cider and baked apples.

It has grown over the years to feature attractions such as a youth marketplace, inflatable games, pumpkin carving, chain saw carving demonstrations, a pet show and numerous musical acts.

Festivities kick off Friday and will run through the weekend, with booths lined up along Charles Street, and more filling the Wellsburg Town Square.

The Wellsburg Applefest is among the unique and favorite community activities of the Ohio Valley. Residents and visitors look forward to it each year, and we thank the festival committee for its work in bringing it back each October.

We encourage everyone to take some time this weekend to enjoy the celebration.
