Among the great things Historic Fort Steuben does for our region is its work to preserve our history.
One of the most interesting ways it meets that mission is through a continuing series of displays.
Topics range widely -- from the women's suffrage movement to a look at Ohio's pioneers and how they played an important role in the country's westward migration to the displays in the museum that remember the Hub Department Store and its significance to the Tri-State Area -- but they all offer a chance to look back and bring some perspective about history and how if effects us today.
That includes the annual Celebrate the Constitution display, which opened Sunday and will run through Sept. 18.
Coordinated with the Daughters of the American Revolution, the annual display at the fort is scheduled around Constitution Day -- Sept. 17 -- the anniversary of the completion of the document in 1787.
Members of the DAR has established three major goals around that recognition, including emphasizing the responsibilities of citizens to protect and defend the Constitution; inform people that the Constitution is the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans; and encourage the study of the historical events that led up to the writing of the document.
The exhibit at the Visitor Center accomplishes all of that, and gives area residents the chance to learn more about the Bill of Rights through an exhibit that was developed by the National Archives, watch a video about the constitutional convention and sign a facsimile of the document.
This year's display is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. It's a chance to learn more about the most important document that guides our lives as Americans, something area residents should take advantage of.
