For the last several years, the Millsop Community Center has served as the focal point for a clothing drive to benefit those who have stepped forward to serve our country.
Seven years ago, Bob Busch, a member of the community center and a Vietnam veteran, proposed the idea of collecting donations of new or gently used clothes to help area veterans in need, especially in the colder, winter months. Each year the drive grew, with truckloads of clothing donations coming in, and additional people stepping in to assist in the effort.
Busch died last year, but the Millsop Community Center and Weirton Park Board are continuing his effort.
This year's Bob Busch Memorial Clothing Drive officially gets under way today, although donations already have been coming in. It will last through this week.
The men and women who have served in our nation's military forces have sacrificed much in their lives, all in an effort to protect our nation and, at times, other nations. Contributing to an effort to provide them with some extra shirts, pants, coats, gloves and socks, is the least we can do to offer our thanks.
We encourage the community to, once again, show their support. Drop off your donations at the front desk of the Millsop Community Center during regular business hours this week. Make sure they are in bags or boxes to assist in their storage until they can be delivered.
Bob Busch started this clothing drive to make a difference in the lives of those, like him, who sacrificed for their country. His example has served as an inspiration and shows the impact one person can have.
Let's come together, as a community, and make sure that impact continues.
