One of the great things about living in our region is the generosity shown by its residents.
We received another reminder of that Monday, when the beneficiaries of this year's Christmas in the Park event were recognized during the Follansbee City Council meeting.
For 19 years, the annual event has offered residents of the Tri-State Area the chance to get an early start on the holiday season. Held in October, the festival provides a fun time for area families and celebrates the holiday season's spirit of giving, with proceeds being divided among local charitable organizations and children who have special medical needs.
Beneficiaries this year include the Follansbee R.E.A.C.H. Program, a local food pantry, which received $3,000 and Aiden Jenkins and Tegryn Danielson, pupils at Brooke Intermediate North who have dealt with diabetes from an early age and who each received $2,000. A scholarship for a Brooke High School graduate will be presented in the spring in memory of Chris Weiler, who died in 2019 from amyotrphopic lateral sclerosis.
All of that money was raised through donations, giveaways and prize drawings and booth fees.
The people of Follansbee and everyone who attends the festival, as well as members of the planning committee, deserve to be commended for their hard work and continued efforts to make the yearly event special. And, we look forward to next October, when Follansbee will celebrate Christmas a couple of months early.
