Each year, the West Virginia Archives and History Commission recognizes a group of individuals who have made it their life's work to preserve and promote the history and culture of their state and community.
We are fortunate, once again, to have one such "History Hero" living among us.
Today in Charleston, Savannah Schroll-Guz, the president and executive director of the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center, will be honored as among the 2022 West Virginia History Heroes with a ceremony held at the state Culture Center.
A volunteer in every sense of the word, Guz spent several years promoting the arts, history and culture of the Weirton community. Since stepping into her role at the museum in June 2020, she has worked non-stop with a variety of projects and programs, even in the midst of a worldwide pendemic.
Among those projects was organizing and implementing an online archive of the Weirton Steel Employee Bulletin, having the Dunbar Recreation Center recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, restoring a wreath from the former Weirton Floor Coverings' store and the ongoing restoration of the Marlinn Shoe Store carousel.
She was selected to represent West Virginia in the Her Flag project, a traveling art project celebrating the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
Most recently, the "Crossroads" exhibit, a traveling display made possible through the Smithsonian Institute and West Virginia Humanities Council, has taken up residence at the Weirton museum, with a variety of local presentations to complement it.
The Weirton area truly is fortunate to have someone as dedicated to the community as Savannah Schroll-Guz. We congratulate her on this honor and express our gratitude for her work and to those who have recognized it.
