Annual 5K a Weirton tradition

It is a summer tradition for Weirton.

For around 25 years now, the Marland Heights 5K Classic has been a competitive race, a community event and a yearly milestone as the summer season begins to wind down. It brings together athletes of all levels, as well as families and more who set off along the course through the Marland Heights area of Weirton.

This year’s race is set for Friday at Marland Heights Park, and whether you are a seasoned runner, a beginner or just someone who wants to get in a bit of a walk, we hope you will take part.

There is still time to register, either filling out an application at the Millsop Community Center this week, or showing up prior to the race Friday evening.

Races begin at 6:30 p.m., and will include the youth fun run, a two-mile fitness walk and the namesake 5K.

This year’s major sponsors are Tri-State Pharmacy, Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, Starvaggi Industries, Tomtreyco McDonald’s and Cardinal Operating Co. Other sponsors include First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union, Guida Realty, Weirton Firefighters IAFF 948, Hancock County Savings Bank, the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Ronnie Jones for House of Delegates District 2, Gus’s Goodies, Shop N’ Save, Riesbeck’s in Follansbee, Serra Village, Studio L, Graphics in Print, Fox’s Pizza Den, Mainstream Physical Therapy and Mario’s Restaurant.

A cookout will follow the race, at which time awards will be handed out in the various race categories.

The Marland Heights 5K truly is something for the community, with many showing up each year to take part or just to cheer on family and friends.

We thank all of those participants, as well as organizers and sponsors, for continuing to make this a successful event.

We look forward to another great race.
