The Jefferson County Fairgrounds are going to the dogs.
And that's a good thing.
This weekend marks the return of the Friendship Cluster AKC All-Breed Dog Show to Friendship Park. It will draw competitors from across the United States, Canada and other parts of the world to the Smithfield area. More than 800 dogs and 160 breeds are expected to be on hand for the three-day event, which opens Friday.
Officials with the presenting organizations -- the Fort Steuben Kennel Association and the St. Clairsville Kennel Club -- said competition is at the heart of the event.
Dogs and their handlers will be vying to earn best in conformation honors., and there will be events targeted toward puppies. Competitors also will go through obedience trials and rally trials, plus dogs will be able to participate in a trick dog certification event and will be able to test their dog's manners
The activities will give residents of the Tri-State Area the chance to see the dogs in action, whether they are being judged against set standards for their particular breed, performing obedience tasks or maneuvering an obstacle course. There will be events for purebreds and mixed breeds
Dock diving exhibitions will be held each day, and a rabies and microchip clinic is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. There will be vendors, drawings and a fun match put on by the Steel Valley Chihuahua Fanciers.
By time everything wraps up on Sunday, area residents will have had the chance to see their favorite breed in action and lean more about different breeds. The event also will present an opportunity for those from outside of the area to enjoy Friendship Park, its lake and the miles of trails that surround it.
It's a chance to celebrate man's best friend while relaxing during the Labor Day weekend.
