If this nation ever needed a family holiday to draw people together for good reasons, today is that day.
Thanksgiving Day 2022 comes just 16 days after a day that served as a touchstone for seemingly endless arguing, bickering, fighting, bad behavior, anger and forgotten friendships.
Repeat after us now: Today is not Election Day. It is Thanksgiving Day.
If you are fortunate enough to be gathering with loved ones and friends, or if you are volunteering in or benefiting from the work of volunteers at a place that feeds the needy, be grateful.
Be grateful for those who cook and serve the meal. Be grateful for having a place that is warm and safe. Be grateful for simply waking up today and having another chance at life, with all the promise that comes with it.
If ever the line "never discuss politics at the dinner table" applies, it does so this year.
Try not to discuss the events of the election and the post-election period for these precious hours today that are spent with loved ones.
And, tomorrow, when the disagreements resume, try to remember the good feeling of having more in common with the people around your table than things that actually, in the grand scheme of your daily life, drive you apart.
Today, park the snark, the insults, the veering right and left in politics, complaints about social media platforms and recognize that if you're fortunate enough to have a good meal and family and friends to share that with, you're ahead of much of the population of the planet, and nothing that happened at the ballot box or since really can take that away from you.
In that spirit, we wish all of our readers a happy Thanksgiving Day.
