Continuing the tradition of our steelworkers

2 min read

The Weirton Steel 25-Year Club Picnic is taking place Saturday, bringing with it a local tradition that can be traced to generations of Weirton area steelworkers.

Organized for more than 70 years, the picnic, to be held at the Serbian Picnic Grounds from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., once again will draw current and past steelworkers from throughout the history of the Weirton steel mill. This year, it is open to retirees and active employees, even if they don't have 25 years of employment.

The picnic is a tradition that traces its history to some of the earliest days of Weirton Steel Corp. as a way for the company to honor the dedication of its employees.

The Weirton mill has seen many changes over the years, from different names -- Weirton Steel, National Steel, ISG, ArcelorMittal and now Cleveland-Cliffs -- and much of what once made up the steel manufacturer is no longer here, but it is good to see this event continue.

We thank the club's leadership and several local businesses and organizations willing to offer a sponsorship for making it happen.

The 25-Year Club Picnic is an opportunity for many current and former steelworkers to reconnect with their co-workers, some of whom return to the area from all across the country specifically for this event.

It is a chance to share stories, catch up on each other's lives and remember their various experiences.

It is an important part of our community, for our history, our culture and, most importantly, for those who attend.

We, again, thank those who take time to organize or contribute to it each year and hope it is able to continue for some time to come.
