The end-of-summer racing tradition in the Weirton area is fast approaching.
For 25 years, the Marland Heights 5K Classic has been a competitive race, a community event and a yearly milestone as the summer season begins to wind down. It brings together athletes of all levels, as well as families and more who set off along the course through the Marland Heights area of the city.
This year's race is set for Friday at Marland Heights Park, and whether you are a seasoned runner, a beginner or just someone who wants to get in a bit of a walk, we hope you will take part.
There is still time to register, either filling out an application at the Millsop Community Center until noon Thursday, going online through Second Sole Timing, or showing up prior to the race Friday evening.
Races begin at 6:30 p.m., and will include the youth fun run, a two-mile fitness walk and the namesake 5K.
Support for the race is being provided by main sponsor Tri-State Pharmacy, major sponsors Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, Tomtreyco McDonald's and Starvaggi Industries, with additional assistance from the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Weirton Medical Center, First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union, Guida Realty, Gus's Goodies, Studio L, Mario's Restaurant, James White Construction, Weirton Firefighters IAFF Local 948, Weirton FOP Lodge 84, Weirton Shop 'N Save, Fox's Pizza Den of Weirton and Graphics in Print.
A cookout will follow the race, at which time awards will be handed out in the various race categories.
The Marland Heights 5K truly is something for the community, with many showing up each year to take part or just to cheer on family and friends.
We thank all of those participants, as well as organizers and sponsors, for continuing to make this a successful event.
We look forward to another great race.
