There is help available

Winter is a difficult time of year for many, as seasonal factors may add to already significant mental health challenges. For some, those challenges may feel overwhelming, and perhaps impossible to overcome. But here in West Virginia there is a resource for those who are feeling as though there is no hope left.

When the 988 Crisis Line was introduced, it provided a more streamlined way for those people to get the help and support they need. According to a report by WSAZ, the line has been put to heavy use.

“We have seen a big increase in calls to 988. Over the course of the last calendar year, our calls have doubled, so that is really significant,” Sheila Moran, who works for the First Choice Services call center in Charleston, told WSAZ.

Moran told the station there are multiple factors contributing to that increase in calls, including the availability of text and chat options for those who are more comfortable seeking help that way. The switch in 2022 away from an 800 number and to the easy-to-remember 988 direct hotline has made a difference, too.

Officials who took the initiative to adapt and change to provide a free hotline that better serves the needs of those who are facing anxiety, depression and even suicidal thoughts are to be commended. It seems to have been a life-saving measure.

Those in need of someone right here in West Virginia to listen and provide support have only to pick up their phones and reach 988 to have access to those resources.

Whether it be you or someone you know, remember the number – and text or call 988 to get help.
