There’s still time to run for office
There are only a couple of days remaining for those interested in seeking public office as part of this year’s election.
There are many offices set to appear on this year’s ballot in West Virginia, and those planning to seek one of those offices have until midnight Saturday to submit a certificate of announcement.
In addition to the presidential election, West Virginia voters will select the state’s next governor, a member of the U.S. Senate, members of the U.S. House of Representatives, West Virginia Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, Commissioner of Agriculture, Attorney General, members of the Intermediate Court of Appeals and state Supreme Court of Appeals.
Locally, there also will be the selection of a member of the state Senate and all local representatives to the state House of Delegates.
Voters in Hancock and Brooke counties will decide judges in the 1st Judicial Circuit and Family Court, with other local offices to include one member of each county commission, county prosecuting attorney, sheriff, assessor, magistrates, seats on the respective county boards of education and conservation district supervisor.
The City of Weirton also is taking registrations for its municipal election in November, which will see the selection of mayor and all seven members of city council. Those wishing to be on the city ballot have until noon on Saturday to register with the City Clerk’s Office.
There remain several of these offices with few candidates, meaning little selection for May’s primary election.
We understand running for any office is a significant commitment, and even moreso if you would win the election, but having a healthy election process also means there is a need for the voters to have a choice.
That can’t happen when only one or two people appear on the ballot.
We hope there are some still out there interested in running for public office, and encourage them to take this opportunity over the next two days to step forward.
