Easter egg hunts bring a sense of joy to children and adults each year.
They serve as a marker for the season of renewal and as a way of welcoming spring.
While many egg hunts were presented last weekend by area communities and organizations, there are several scheduled to be held Saturday. Formats can sometimes vary, but they all offer the chance for children to find eggs that are filled with candy and other prizes.
The rites of spring also have become more inclusive during the years. An example was the second-annual Special Connections Eastern Egg Hunt held Sunday at the Crossroads Ministry Center on Kragel Road. A collaboration among the Special Needs Parents Support in the Ohio Valley Facebook page, the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Crossroads Christian Church, the event was designed with individuals who have disabilities in mind.
Another outlet for those who are looking for Easter eggs is the Great Steubenville Eggsibition, which runs through April 14. An offering of the Steubenville Cultural Trust, the event features 42 giant eggs that are on display in businesses throughout the downtown area.
Maps showing the location of each of the eggs are available at the Steubenville Popcorn Co. at 157 N. Fourth St. Those who visit all of the eggs can return to the popcorn shop where they will have the opportunity to sign a chalk egg.
Included in the event is the StoryWalk being held in conjunction with the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. Pages of a classic Easter story have been placed among the eggs. Participants are able to follow the story with the help of a map that can be obtained at the library's Main Branch on Fourth Street, Drosselmeyer's Nutcracker Shoppe, Bookmarx Books and Leonardo's Coffeehouse.
When all the pages of A.J. Wood's "The Golden Egg" have been located, participants can return to the library to collect a prize.
The Eggsibition and the StoryWalk provide opportunities for area residents to enjoy being outside and to appreciate the changes that are being made in downtown Steubenville.
Just like the many Easter egg hunts that are held across the Tri-State Area each year, they provide the chance to have some fun and spend quality time with members of your family and your friends.
